Moses provides another example of leaving your life behind, dying to self, and taking on a new life within the purposes of God.

Moses was born into chaos. Egypt had forgotten Joseph and had grown fearful of their neighbors, the Israelites. So, the Egyptians enslaved the Israelites and took measures to control their population by killing the newborn sons of Israel. Moses’ mother hid Moses by faith, casting him in a mini-ark and floating him downriver. Pharaoh’s daughter raised him up from the water, and he was raised in Pharaoh’s household.

When he was old enough to decide, he could choose to be Egyptian or Israelite. He could choose a path of luxury or of slavery. He chose slavery. God used Moses to then free the people of Israel from slavery.

Moses embodies for us saying no to a comfortable life to pursue the riches of life with God. He was looking to a greater wealth than Pharaoh could provide, only to be found in Christ.

Jesus himself, like Moses, often chose to live among and lift up the oppressed rather than the privileged. How does this confront our desire to live a comfortable life? What areas of society is Christ drawing your attention towards so that you may lift up another?
